Hi, Just joined to put up some info/pictures relating to my paternal Grandfather Leslie Frank Johnson (T/1509139) who according to his "Soldiers Release Book" was de-mobbed at Military Dispersal Unit No.5 Guildford on the 4th Feb 1946 after serving in 558 and 123 Coy RASC. We know that he served in Africa, Sicily and Italy as a Tanker driver. During his service he would often send home cartoons to his wife that he would doodle on airgraph forms. One of these cartoons was a drawing of Monty which was turned into a post card for soldiers to send home. I'll add some scans here and on follow on comments if anyone is interested. Regards.
Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing those. How much have you researched your grandfather's war record?
Nothing at present, like many he didn't really talk much about his service, he has been gone several years now and I am getting some items ready to send to a cousin and made some digital copies and thought I'd upload them to a WW2 site of which yours was recommended.
If you haven't already done so, why not make an application to MOD for copy of full service records, see this link https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records#service-records-of-deceased-service-personnel Armed with this more detailed info you can trace the war diaries for the units he was in, for the relevant dates.
Thanks for posting the images. His unit (558 Water Tank Company) was part of Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily WO169/11963 is their diary from 1943 so would cover their time in North Africa and Sicily See attached from the Order of Battle
Hi I am researching the family tree of a friend of my parents. I showed him your group photo of the 558 and he recognised his Dad - Joseph Biggin - he is on the second row from the front, last on the right. Would you mind if I use this photo in his family tree book and perhaps mention your grandfather?
