During WW2 Millions of Perch were harvested from Lake Windermere and others, they were sent away to be Tinned and sold as Lake District Percines, Marinated in Tomato sauce for flavour. These were 'Off Ration' and supplemented the WW2 Diet. Anyone seen a tin?

Salmon and sea trout pass through the lake to spawn in the tributaries. During WW2, Windermere 'perchines' (canned perch) were produced as a substitute for sardines. Everyday wartime lives
