Hello everyone! I came across your conversation about ATS Serjeant Anne Taylor by chance.

I have been researching family on ancestry.co.uk for some time and recently two new hints popped up linking our Anne Taylor (nee Faulkner) to the UK Army Roll of Honour and UK Find-a-Grave Index. I see from your thread that the CWGC are commissioning a headstone for Anne Taylor and am worried in case our Anne Faulkner/Taylor is not the Anne Taylor ATS Serjeant mentioned on the Brookwood Memorial.

I note that Tony has had sight of Anne Taylor's war record and feels that some of the details on her record agree but wonder if this could be double-checked?

Our Anne Taylor was born Anne (Annie) Faulkner 1910 Somers Town, St Pancras to father William Faulkner, mother Annie Jackson. From 1932-1939 she lived at 13 Stephenson House, York Rise, St. Pancras listed on the electoral rolls as Anne Faulkner.

In 1940, Anne married George Taylor, mentioned in this thread. In 1945 Anne Taylor is on the electoral roll for 13 Stephenson House and that is where she died the same year. We have no idea whether or not she was in the ATS and as already mentioned above, there is no mention of this on her death certificate. Is there any way that this can be verified? It would not be fitting for the CWGC to go ahead with the gravestone if she is not the correct Anne Taylor, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Teresa

    Welcome to the forum

Good to see your post, however Tonym is not in the best of health and has been looking for someone to take over his research for him. I say this so that you will appreciate the situation and the possible time lag in Tonym replying to your post, especially as he has the main documents.

Please bear with him, and would suggest if possible you continue your family research, so that you can both reach the best conclusion.

    Hi Tricky Dicky

Thanks for the welcome. I'm sorry to hear about Tonym and wish him all the best.

According to the details on Ancestry, Anne Taylor was born in West London and lived in NW London, that does not tie in with our Annie Taylor (Faulkner). I will contact the CWGC directly to see if they can help.

    Many thanks - Teresa

    Hello Teresa
I went to St Pancras in the summer to try to find the grave location but due to vegetation I could not locate.
I have the grave registration location that shows a grave for a George Taylor. This is the same grave location as the CWGC commemoration for Annie Taylor.
    see post number 20

    Hello Clive
Yes, my daughter-in-law and myself had the same problem when we went to St Pancras Cemetary last winter, pouring rain, trying to locate the graves of Annie Faulkner-Taylor's parents William & Annie Faulkner, they were both in paupers graves with quite a few others, buried at separate times. I can't believe it but we managed to find Annie Faulkner's grave (mother of Annie Taylor nee Faulkner). The cemetary office gave us a very useful tip that although paupers graves did not have a proper headstone, family members sometimes put their own little markers on the plot and they gave us a list of other people that were buried with Annie. By scraping away the debris from one particular marker stone, we found the name of one of the people on the list, thereby identifying where Annie was buried, it was quite an emotional moment. We also located more or less the site of William, although it was covered by brambles and bushes and we had to fight our way through. We looked quite a side by the end of the day and were lucky not to have twisted ankles! I hope we can find out for sure about Anne Taylor.

    Regards
    Teresa

Does anyone know who Chris Harley is that Tony refers to in his posts and how I could make contact with him?

    Thanks

I'm very pleased to post that Chris Harley has informed me that the service record in his possession for Anne Taylor confirms that she enlisted into the ATS as Annie Faulkner prior to her marriage to George Faulkner. We are so pleased to receive this verification and thank all of you who have posted messages. Our grateful thanks to those responsible for finding her and passing details to the CWGC for the commissioning of a headstone at her grave.

    Many thanks
    Teresa
