My father was transported as a POW from Tripoli to Naples leaving 27th December 1941 on a German ship. Is there an information source for the names of the ships, convoy details etc used by the Italians & Germans to transport Allied POWs to Italy? The only info I can find (sadly) is about the ships that were sunk by the Royal Navy.
    Thanks

On this site there is mention of a German transport ship 'Ankara' transporting 1,400 PoW's from Tripoli to Naples on the 30th December 1941 but no mention of the 27th.

    1/ Ankara left with 1,000 POW on 29 12 41 and arrived Naples at 1100 hours 1 1 42.
2/Vettor-Pisani left Tripoli with British POW on 27 Dec 1941. The only ship to leave the harbour that day. Vettor Pisani was a modern fast merchant, launched in 1939, .I don't have the number of POWs, but Napoli was the destination. Departed Tripoli at 1800 on 27 Dec 41, arrived Napoli 29 Dec at 1030 hrs. Escorted by the Tp Partenope e Pollice.
    Cheers

    Geoff,

Thanks for raising this query as my father captured 23rd December said he landed in a snowy Naples 1st January 1942 so likely on the Ankara.
