Yes! Joe, and the various O/C s , our Knick name for the Battalion C/O was "Shagnasty", that was Lt Col Cooke Collis

    Hello Wilf,

I was reading something about 'Red Ted' Cooke-Collis the other week and the book mentioned that the Green Howards had a different nickname for him, the reasons for which that article/book was not the right place to divulge.

One can well imagine how he got the nickname 'Shagnasty', but would you like to divulge the official reason? :D

I look forward to your response, but understand if you don't want to go into too much detail!

    Best,

    Steve.

Sorry Graham, wish I could say I knew any of them but I cant, other ex WW2 vets will
be just like myself, the number of mates you actually knew by name were very few,
for my part, I cant say I even knew all those in my Platoon which would number between 35 to 40 men. beyond that, Company, Battalion etc I didn't know anyone by name, I suppose that might appear strange, but I'm sure others will confirm.

    All the best Graham-- Wilf

Thanks Wilf, it was just a shot in the dark.

    For Joe Brown:)

Wilf has asked me to post this photo on his behalf.
Here is a picture of Wilf (he is the one on the left) taken at Redcar in 1937 operating the D L S R

Wilf says "They said it was effective at 6 miles range Joe, also one other term they used was "Lateral Dispersion", perhaps you can enlighten me Joe"

    Hi Wilf,
Just thought that I would let you know that there is a tutorial here that may be of assistance to you in posting images. I have done others too on resizing images with PiXresizer (free) and also Windows 7 if they are of any help.

    Best regards,

    Graham

Cheers Wilf, no I'm just interested in the Green Howards and military history in general. My Great Grandfather was in the 10th Battalion Green Howards in WWI though.

    Cheers

    Hi Wilf,
    Certainly 'rum' weather eh?

Shouldn't be much different on the Mac, I think finder is the equivalent to MS explorer.

  15. Thanks Mel, I think that would be the Royal Corps of Sigs, ask him if he ever came across a Stanley Palmer, --Stan was a mate of mine and was transferred from 6th Green Howards Sigs to 50 Div HQ Sigs, sadly he fell victim to Alzheimers a few years ago and
    passed on, --Wilf

    Hi again Wilf,

Sorry for being so long replying -work!
Dad does not remember the name Stan Palmer. Bit of a long shot really, I suppose, all roughly the same place but in small groups of close friends.
He read your entries on the Bill Cheall site and had a laugh about the Desert Roses.

Will be interested to read any of your recollections which may jog his memory.

    Best regards

    Hi Wilf,
Wonder if you can help? Trying to find out what an entry into my uncles service records mean. The entry says what looks like 'Classified class I (0) Scale D (arrears applied for)'. Can it be to do with pay? The date the arrears go back to I think is when he was in hospital. Did they reclassify fitness classification when injured, and if so was the pay reduced? I can't think of anything else that it might be.

    Thanks for your help.

    Graham

Hi! Mel, Glad Mel Sen liked the diary entries, what were his reactions to my description of the bath we managed to get one day in the canvas bath?- also ask him about FFI inspections, there was just no room for feeling embarassed, in fact, a lot stood there very proud, I regret to say I wasn't one of them, so often I remember the lighter moments like that and sometimes just have to laugh outwardly.

    Cheers for now-- Wilf S
