I'm going to say no. Walcheren/Scheldt was the first time they were used I believe.

  3. I've seen a thread somewhere on another forum on the same question, and I think opinion was sharply divided!

I don't believe any were used in the troop carrying/assault landing role for Normandy. In the discussion mentioned above, I think there was a tell of some amphibious tractors being used shuttling supplies to and fro, but in limited numbers. I think it was over on TMP WW2 discussion, I'll have a look and see what I can find, though someone will have likely answered in the meantime!

Yes, it was TMP, alright I hope to post the link here?

It has lots of links in the fourth post from the top. 5th Assault Regt, RE, part of 79th Armd Div, were the first British unit to convert to the Buffalo, joined later on by 11th RTR and part of 6th Aslt Regt, RE, with all participating in numerous operations in Holland.

I agree, Starfury, some 'buffalos' were I believe used in a cargo carrying capacity rather than landing troops. Source was I believe a US based landing craft history website, but can't remember which one!

    Hi,
A photo of two that were left on Utah Beach after the war and have been outside the museum since then. Believe one is now in the process of being renovated.

As other have said they were not used in the assault but in the build up after. There is some colour footage of them around and they are mentioned in the book ‘Spearheading D-Day : American Special Units in Normandy’ by Jonathan Gawne; Histoire & Collections, Paris, 1998

There is some good information on the Missing Lynx military vehicle modelling website if you do a search in the Allied section.
