US Army/Navy 'dog tag'? Dredged from the Pacific Ocean

I've just been sent an enquiry regarding some ID tags that were found near a wreck in the Pacific. Most were standard US Army & Navy tags, but there were several 'star shaped' tags amongst them that have me stumped. My first thoughts were that, if they are for ID purposes, then they are a form of mass-produced 'private purchase' tag. However, my gut feeling says that they are more likely to be some form of equipment marker or a 'watch' tag for the USN.

Never having come across anything like these before, I wondered if anyone had any ideas?

    Cheers.

Any suggestions ,anyone? Does my 'gut feeling' appear reasonable? (just to help me out in my email reply to the enquirer).

    Cheers.

Never seen one like that before, Dave. Sure its not a 'Vietnam Special'?
