Captain Leslie Thompson D.S.C, OBE, RD was born in Beverley in 1888. He served a 4-year apprenticeship in the Merchant Navy from 1903-1907 aboard the sailing vessels ROUTENBURN and CELTICBURN. He passed his Master’s ticket in 1912. He served in the Royal Naval Reserve during WWI and continued in service with the Merchant Navy/RNR between the wars and WW2. In 1945 he was serving with Naval Party 1500 at Normandy when awarded the OBE. RNR Temp Lt 1914. Awarded D.S.C. 4 July 1918. Awarded OBE 1945 – while attached to NP1500 at Normandy. Died 4.11.1946 at Port Said Photo circa 1919 while Second Officer MN. Hugh
Thompson's RNR papers are available from TNA. His DSC was for services in submarines – Page 7304 | Supplement 30756, 18 June 1918 | London.... Shortly before he had also received a MiD - Page 4646 | Supplement 30635, 16 April 1918 | Londo... The minelayer E.51 (attached to H.M.S. Maidstone) was apparently also used in U-boat decoy operations towed submerged behind a trawler. Thompson is said to be one of the officers in this photograph – the man on the extreme right looks like Hugh’s picture to me. Submarine E51 Crew 1918 World Naval Ships Forums Archive
I would suggest he is center right next to the C.O. Lt Marrack. The guy on the extreme right is not an officer. Hugh
