    Emps,

There certainly is one, if not two authors on the RN action against slavery. That could be a starting point. There is a historian on Twitter whose tweets I have seen, not bookmarked, who writes on the theme.

Using the british empire reexamined reminded me of Niall Ferguson and on a quick look this should help.

Empires are often considered morally reprehensible these days so any attempt to extol one is liable to evoke scorn or laughter.

I don't know if these count or not since their central figure is a rotter of an anti-hero, but perhaps you might look at the Flashman novels.

Give it thirty years or so and there's a fair chance they'll be rebadged and the best thing since sliced bread.

The Government of Angola today signed the latest in a long line of Territorial Flexibility Pacts with the People's Republic of China.

According to the terms of this controversial deal, the host nation will cede possession of key natural resources and technical sovereignty, permit judicial oversight and unlimited overflight, and begin integration of its armed forced into the larger Chinese military in return for sweeping financial incentives, a modern infrastructure development programme, and a pledge of unlimited defence commitment. This pledge is viewed as critical locally, given recent setbacks in the nation's ongoing border conflict with neighbouring Namibia and a general background of regional instability. Beijing is said to have deferred negotiation over proposed vexillological changes in order to maintain public support and to ensure the proposals are approved at the first attempt in the forthcoming referendum.

Turning now to the financial world...

The rule of empires seems to be: yesterday's empires were bad. Today's empires are OK...so long as we don't call them empires.

    Sigh.

And the landlord considers once again, while polishing a glass on a dirty tea towel, whether he should just bar some more, or put it down to the exuberance of 'youth'.
Thread closed for, oooh, maybe a week or two, and we may return to see if people can discuss what could be an interesting subject in a manner more suited to the lounge bar. Certainly a subject with WW2 connections and ramifications.

And for what it's worth; some bits of empire were good, and some not so much. Imagine that. Always thought 'we' understood the carrot over the stick better than many European colonial powers.

See you in a couple of weeks.
    Maybe.
