    Hi Lee,

Congratulations on the forum, which I 'discovered' thanks to the similar Great War site. I hope it turns out just as successful.

Could I suggest that the 'War in the Pacific' forum could be broadened to include both the campaign in Burma and the fact that this was not an entirely American v Japanese theatre of conflict! The description of the forum is quite narrow, if read literally, and leaves some potentially interesting threads 'out in the cold'.

    Kindest regards,

    Geoff

    Hi, Geoff!

Indeed some of the greatest battles fought in the Pacific were against the British. But I don't think that we should expand more the forums, because then we'll get too many of them. By example, "War at Sea" being divided in "War in the Pacific Ocean" and "War in the Atlantic Ocean". Then what about the Mediterranean? Etc.

I think that "War in the Pacific" stands for everything that happened from India to california since 1932 until 1945. But maybe its just me?

The blurb at the start specifies 'War in the Pacific' is for the Japanese - American battles of the Pacific. In fact if I had a question about the 14th or Indian Armies I wouldn't be sure in what section I should put it.

Perhaps War in the Pacific could be changed to 'War in Asia' or 'War in the Far East'?

I made this point in a Burma-related enquiry some time ago. The British victory over the Japanese in 1944-5 was the biggest defeat suffered by the soldiers of Nippon during the war. Incidentally, my Dad, a Fourteenth Army Veteran, would be amazed to learn that he fought in 'the Pacific'!

    Hi Friedrich,

I was not suggesting for a moment that we should have more forums! There seem to be plenty already....

Brownaq neatly makes the point, perhaps better than my original posting, that it is the description attached to 'War in the Pacific' which would benefit from broadening.

    Regards,

    Geoff

Alright. I get the point. Then what has to be changed is the description of the forum; something that includes everything there. The Chino-Japanese conflict, the Japanese war against the USA, the British Empire and the Soviet Union, since 1932 until 1945, right?

Lee, if you see this, could you make this little change? ;)

Saw a good documentary last month called 'Secret Fleets' which was about the submarine base at Fremantle in WW2. This base was home to a very large amount of American, British and Dutch submarines. The british and dutch had quite a presence in the Indian Ocean theatre.

And so did the Germans as it happens. See this:

There were extensive RAF ASW operations in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea against U-boats and this gives an operational account of one of them:

My father was stationed with the army at Scuisuiban in Somaliland (referred to in the operational report) in 1944 and had a lot of contact with the RAF base where at the time 621 Squadron operated Wellington ASW patrols, a forgotten little war now to say the least.

Does anyone know the name of a German (I think privateer but not sure) that patrolled around Indian and Pacific oceans. It was camoflauged as a merchant ship from Denmark and it sank H.M.S Sydney.

Does any one have any information?

    Thanks!

This sit will give a brief rundown of the German ship Kormoran.

One of the more interesting aspects of the Dutch service in this theatre of operations was their successful sinking of another submarine, a German U-Boat which was en-route to japan. I heard it was the only successful sinking of a submarine by another submarine in this theatre but am willing to hear if there were any others.

Excellent article and it looks like part of an excellent site which I have added to my favourites.

BTW, seeing that this is the feedback board, are we drifting off topic?
