Just to remind anyone who has any photos of Ladies Headstones, we have a thread called FAO TonyM on which several of us post them. He collects any that we find.

    Barry

Yes please! Although my project is basically UK & Empire/Commonwealth I do have the odd few non-E/C who obviously worked or nursed in close liaison with our services and as the Soviet Nurse is buried in a CWGC cemetery she may well have nursed alongside our girls. Most welcome

    Regards, Tony

This is an account of how Private Vera Barbara Matin, ATS died on 16 August 1944. This comes from Shoreham at War, The people of Shoreham Kent, 1939-45 and I quote:-

"Vera was the daughter of Horace & Ann Martin of Shoreham and younger sister of Gwen, who also served in the ATS.

Vera and Gwen served together at Biggin Hill and were on route to a gun-site at Sittingbourne on 16 August 1944 when a doodlebug hit a railway bridge at Newington and the train on which the sisters were travelling hurtled into the wreckage.

Vera was 19 years of age and is buried in Shoreham churchyard."

    Thanks Robert

Makes the profile more personal than just a death record. I assume then that Gwen survived the incident?

Yes her Sister did survive the incident and got through the war. The village they came from is 3 miles away and the locals wrote a book for the 60th Anniversary of the end of the war.

The village also earned the unwanted distinction of being the most heavily bombed parish in England. The german bombers used to dump their unused loads on what they thought was open countryside.

"dump their unused loads on what they thought was open countryside."

Unfortunate for the villagers but suggests that some of the pilots probably had a conscience.

I stand corrected. Shoreham was the most heavily bombed parish in Britain (not England). 474 high explosive bombs and 22,000 incendiaries. With 10 square miles of farmland and woodland, there were very few casualties. 8 civilians and one soldier.

In one incident on the night of 22 January 1944, a 1000 kg parachute bomb landed on an isolated farm housing a family of 10. 3 were killed.
