Hello all, I am looking for information about an Allied mortar platoon during WWII. 1. Number of man. 2. Structure (Officers and other ranks). 3. Number of mortars. 4. Was this always the same for every unit/country? Looking forward to any reply.
From Bouchery 'The British Soldier from D Day to VE Day'; one slice of Mortar from one period/Army (With the usual caveat that this stuff confuses me silly, so I've quite possibly erred somewhere) Inf. Battalion - Support Co. - 3" Mortar Platoon. British 1944. 1xSubaltern. 41 WO & OR 6 Mortars 1 Revolver 41 Enfields 2 Brens 4 PIATS 3 Motorbikes, solo. 3 15cwt 4x2 trucks. 7 3.in Mortar Carriers. (I'm not clear if those carriers have additional mortars to the six mentioned above)

The info that I have is roughly the same as what you have for an ordinary (not para, airlanding or motor) infantry battalion for 1944. Only six mortars - the carriers would not come with mortars included. I guess the seventh was FFW for the platoon commander (and also as a spare). Chris
