Snow and cold are in the offing .. but first we have to deal with high water levels on the rivers: The Rhine (or Waal) at Nijmegen ... the floodplains are under water and the river splashes against the foot of the dikes.

Dutch beavers in a vain attempt to stem the tide ...

The newly constructed spillway at Nijmegen is a true paradise for kayakers

As a thief in the night ... we had a real blizzard last night .. which covered Holland in 20 cm of snow:

An unprecedented situation: to leave the house this morning we had to dig through the snow. Stupid me had left the snow shovel in the barn outside ...

Definitely the right kind of snow.

We've got the wrong kind of snow here. Or you can smile as you skate along the canals in Amsterdam !

Just a light dusting of powdery snow in west London. It is falling as lightweight tiny ball bearings!

The snow will last for at least a week and a half ...

Over a week of continuous frost (- 16 C last night) and little snowfall ... while temperatures are dropping, the Dutch skating fever is rising ... will there be a "Elfsteden-tocht" this year? This legendary long-distance skating event on natural ice, of over 200 kilometres, was held for the last time in 1997. In 1985 the 13th edition was held for the first time since 1963, though it was a close call. There followed a 14th edition in 1986; and a 15th in 1997.

The 1963 edition was a rough one, because of the severe cold (- 6 to -18 C), strong wind and snowdrifts only 127 out of 10.000 participants made it to the finish line. Of the 568 competition skaters, only 57 managed to enter within the required 2 hours of the winner. Of the 9294 tourers who had started the tour, only 69 were able to do so at the end of the day:

Snow Clearing a Lancaster ready for Ops 001.jpg I saw the news where the weather was extremely disruptive in the Netherlands and Germany.

The 1939/1940,1946/1947 and 1962/1963 winters...no central heating in those years and people had to wear extra clothing....long johns appeared to be the winter underwear for men in the 1940s...living room fire kept in overnight by a covering of slack coal.

On Monday Binbrook in the Lincolnshire Wolds was cut off by snow.an experience which would be common at RAF Binbrook during the war...still with groundcrew efforts they kept the station operational....best illustrated with an official released photograph of a Lancaster being dug out.....could have been taken at any BC airfield................(Reference Air Historical)

Very cold today, but no snow. There was one puddle across the path and I nearly slipped and fell. The cows on the walk walked very slow and looked before every step. They checked everything.

Winter in Arnhem; after a week of severe frost (from - 3 C in day time, up to - 17 C last night) still a lot of snow and now splendid sunny weather:
