  14. My belated congratulations on your 95th birthday Ron! We cherish your presence in this forum!

I tried to decipher your diary's entry for 16 Aug 44. Please correct any errors I may have made:

    Ron's 21st birthday diary entry:

    1944 31 Days AUGUST
16 Wed. Drove? from range? in morning collectIng mail for advance party. Trouble with jeep. At 7.30 drove Major ??? & Mr. Bark? to Alex. Went to the Jewish Club for supper. Drove back at 10 pm.

I hope that you had a nice birthday supper at the Club with good friends, a big cake and candles too :D

Do you happen to remember what was on your mind then?

    Michel

  15. Oops! Forgot that you had already transcripted your diary in this other post: WWII Excerpts from "Cairo, Biography of a City"

    Should read as follows:

    Wednesday 16th. August 1944
My 21st Birthday. To & from camp in the morning collecting mail for advance party. Trouble with jeep. At 7.30 pm drove Major Mouland & Mr.Bark to Alexander. Went to the Jewish Club for supper. Drove back at 10pm.

    My questions still stand :)

Strangely enough, despite it being 74 years ago, I do remember my thoughts on the day.

I had been with my unit since May '43 and in that time had suffered enough danger and boredom in equal doses to make me well aware of the true life of a Driver Op in the line.

By contrast, our time in Egypt was, to me anyway, sheer delight, particularly in my new role as jeep driver to Major Mouland and I reveled in every moment !

Finally, as I have already stated, I am most grateful to have received all your good wishes on this thread. With a bit of luck I shall still be around for a few years yet :)

    Best regards to all

    Ron

Happy Birthday Ron...I have enjoyed reading your experiences in the 49th L.A.A. Regt RA and your posts on the forum - looking forward to many more! As you know my great uncle Sergeant Frank Holmes served with this unit. Wish you could have met him.
