I just got a Paybook and other bits to 2696698 John McLeod Teasdale, so I had a look on Diane's unofficial Scots Guards nominal roll ( Scots Guards: unofficial Nominal Roll by Army Number order ) in case he got a mention and was surprised to see a Guardsman C Simpson with the same number so I dropped her a message to check it, Diane confirmed the number from the casualty files on findmypast (and I had a look too) and the number is the same.

So Gdsm Simpson's number is from an official source - Gdsm Teasdale's paybook is a bit odd as it initially had 2696689 (so last 2 the other way round) but has been amended (I believe at the time) - I also have his dog tags, army driving licence and have seen his kit bag all of which have the ...98 number so he seems to have served the whole War using that number - he transferred to the RASC and while there he moved about between various companies, so if his number was incorrect it was missed several times.

Any thoughts? he died less than 25 years ago so I'd only get a limited service record if I applied (and would rather avoid spending £30 for that)

    Hi Alistair,

I'm sure FMP (may be Ancestry) have the Scots Guards attestation books up until just before the war. Don't know if he was a pre 1939 attestation but it may be worth having a look there.

    Good Luck

Thanks for the pointer - he was October 39 so possibly not in there - oddly though when I go on FMP (and also checked ancestry) I don't see the attestation books in the index - but when I read your post it did prompt a memory of them and when I googled I got a couple of hits saying they were on FMP, I'm not sure if they have been on and removed or I'm just being stupid in not seeing them.
