Just replied via PM before seeing this.
Will double up answer to keep spreading the contextual word as it gets queried a fair bit.
We get the ads that Google provides. They're contextual and based on the Google witchcraft that looks at your web searches and keywords on sites visited before making a guess at what you might be interested in. Often clever, sometimes way off-beam.
Mine are all for Nintendo and cloud storage as that's what I've been shopping for a lot recently.

I think you can still turn Google's contextual stuff off, but that can randomise ads more.

    Interesting...

At Christmas time my wife, her parents (who were staying with us) and I were travelling in the car from home to a local restaurant. We passed a small supplier of heating oils, red-diesel, etc. and I voiced a question: "I wonder how much red-diesel is compared to white-diesel these days?" Now my computer was no-where near, as I'd left it at home and I haven't looked online for any information connected with diesel. However, I am now inunndated with ads for red-diesel.

Again, yesterday afternoon, I met a client in London and we discussed Croatia at some length. Again, my computer was nowhere near, as I'd left it at home and I haven't looked online for any information connected with Croatia. This morning I have lots of ads with Croatian connections.

Figure that... ESP, mind reading computer... spooky...

Is my computer really that smart? If so, I'll get it to pick my Euro lottery numbers for this Friday's draw.

Maybe a better question is, if computers can read minds why do some forum members get ads for dating sites???

    Best,

    Steve.

I'm getting red diesel too. Weird, as I thought it was a very specialist market. (I'm not allowed to click ads on here to find out, as if I do it too often Google equates site admin with clicks and starts getting shirty.)
Some campaigns are normal advertising, pay more and the advertising giant that is Google will bombard more people. Though I think I've sold so much of my soul to Google and their 'free' stuff (maps etc.) I wouldn't be too surprised if at some point I've agreed to mind-reading and listening in...

To be honest, the only time contextual/clever stuff really bugs me is after you've bought something you were looking for. Still getting loads of stuff relevant only to kids' Christmas pressies.

I am always amused by the ads I get.

Here am I posting an article on WW2 relating to being, for example, shelled and mortared , when, at the same time, I can see an advert for M&S Ladies Slacks. All this simply because before making my posting I had been helping she who must be obeyed to place an order for the very same item.

I understand completely the process that provides the cookies and cheerfully accept that this the price I pay for having free membership of this delightful forum.

    So there :)

This is intriguing. I posted earlier in this thread and, the next time I visited this site, there was an advert, not for single Muslims but for single Chinese! This time of visiting I'm back to the B&Q adverts! All quite amusing!

    Tongue in cheek questions:
Does posting on a thread skew the adverts?.....in which case why does no-one ever try to sell me holidays to France, Belgium and Germany or second-hand Comet tanks. (Could be interesting next time I enter this Forum?)
Have they been listening to she who must be obeyed who is convinced, possibly correctly, that I'm behind with the decorating?

Will answer my own question. The top advert is now about searching Death records and the bottom advert is B&Q...........I guess I really do need to get on with the decorating!

This is uncanny. Holiday advert at the top and Asian dating at the bottom. I guess I don't need to do the decorating after all!

I saw an Ad for motor engine spare parts on a Holocaust website that was explaining how the Nazis used the carbon monoxide produced by motor engines to gas Jews in some of the death camps.

I was watching a TV show about Queen Victoria and wasn't sure what year Albert died so I put "Prince Albert" in google search. Big mistake. Something popped up that was so awful that my brain couldn't process what my eyes were seeing fast enough to close them. Just glad it snapped eyes shut instead of stopping my heart. I pray I never get anything related to THAT search.

    Hi SDP

As you are feeling left out, let me try and sell you a French holiday in Brittany :P

Having a .fr email address also makes it interesting on the ad front ................................... and I guess may confuse Google somewhat as most of the websites/searches I do are in English ...... :ewink:

Ah, Brittany. Lovely spot. Never been to the western side but spent quite some time in the eastern part near Rennes, Vitre and Fougeres and also the southern coast. Just love the samphire down there. .....wonder what adverts I'll get now? :)
