Hi all. Can anybody come up with a date for a royal visit to Crewe in 1940 please? There is a certain amount of debate going on regarding the King and Queen's visit to the town on either August 29 or September 5. There is a Pathe newsreel of the event on line but no date. If anybody can come up with the evidence to pin it to one of these dates, I will be truly grateful. Best wishes, Mark.
That's the report which has caused all the arguments as if you work it out according to this report, it is September 5???
The Band Dairy puts it on Aug 29th which was after 2 night raids. I presume the newspaper was told to 'delay/confuse' the details.
If it's really that important... 1. Check the itinery of the Royal Train. Records are held at the National Railway Museum. Check boxes 08/40 and 09/40. 2. Follow The Times reporting for the days before and after.
I suspect that all those smart enough to work out 5 September was a Thursday neglected to work out that 29 August was one too. 30 seconds of google-fu and problem solved.
