Jeff - little use you tut-tutting over our reluctance to go along with Dave's National(sic)petition - as I indicated in my last posting - this amounts to an interference of another governments attitude towards the awarding of honours - successive US governments in the past have failed to award this particular honour to Mr Murphy - and for reasons best known to themselves have honoured various Head of State with this honour and I for one - am not about to speculate on the reasons for so doing - but ackowledging the fact that Mr Murphy arose from the ranks to the rank of Lootenant as a possible consideration.......after all - Mrs Thatcher started off as a grocer's daughter !
    Cheers

Then say "Thank you for posting" and move on. -_-

I was not commenting on the request, but rather the response. I doubt he had any idea of the general orientation of the discussion here, given the title of the forum.

I would not expect you contribute to the petition anymore that I would suspect you would want my input on a new honor for Alastair Stevenson Pearson or Tommy Macpherson. However, I would expect a congenial response. B)

Jeff - I really thought I was being congenial - as for your other friends - I have no idea who they are- surely doesn't take too long to discover this is a British Commonwealth forum - it's appears to be clear enough.....as for interfering in other governments jurisdictions - I do not do that- not do I expect it in open Forums
    with my warmest regards..
    Cheers

Reading this little kerfuffle reminded me about an article I had read recently concerning his widow, Pamela. At the time I glanced through it as typical internet fluff and my searches online only kept on repeating the same words:

Pamela Murphy, widow of WWII hero and actor, Audie Murphy, died peacefully at her home on April 8, 2010. She was the widow of the most decorated WWII hero and actor, Audie Murphy, and established her own distinctive 35 year career working as a patient liaison at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration hospital, treating every veteran who visited the facility as if they were a VIP.

Any soldier or Marine who came into the hospital got the same special treatment from her. She would walk the hallways with her clipboard in hand making sure her boys got to see the specialist they needed.

If they didn't, watch out. Her boys weren't Medal of Honor recipients or movie stars like Audie, but that didn't matter to Pam. They had served their country. That was good enough for her. She never called a veteran by his first name. It was always "Mister." Respect came with the job.

"Nobody could cut through VA red tape faster than Mrs. Murphy," said veteran Stephen Sherman, speaking for thousands of veterans she befriended over the years. "Many times I watched her march a veteran who had been waiting more than an hour right into the doctor's office. She was even reprimanded a few times, but it didn't matter to Mrs. Murphy. "Only her boys mattered. She was our angel."

etc etc - see Pam Murphy, widow of actor Audie Murphy, was veterans’ friend and advocate : Veterans Today for full story

However, I just resorted to checking with the Snopes web-site and they have confirmed the story as True, so there you go. Impressed me for some reason:

In 1971 Audie Murphy died at the age of 45 in a plane crash, leaving behind his wife of 20 years, Pamela. (Although the couple had separated in the early 1960s, they remained married until Murphy's death). In order to support herself after her husband's death, Pamela Murphy took a job at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration (VA) hospital in California's San Fernando Valley and spent the next 35 years working at that facility, where she was widely known and praised for the level of care and concern she exhibited towards the veterans who sought treatment there.

Pamela Murphy passed away at the age of 90 in April 2010, prompting Dennis McCarthy of the Los Angeles Daily News to pen the column about her referenced above, posthumously bringing Pamela Murphy a measure of the publicity recognition that she had always disdained while alive.

Haps she deserves the medal more.!!!

Haps she does not deserve the medals more, haps she deserves being honoured on her own merits instead of through reflected glory.

Tom, My position on this particular matter is known already, and it appears the thread originator and I have already reached a tacit agreement. But what are you saying? This is a British Commonwealth forum? Is the scope of this forum limited to BCers? Can't we speak of anything else? Am I to be expelled because my user name is in Russian? Should we close the Holocaust section because not many Australian or South African Jews died in Treblinka?

I don't see anything wrong with the notion of honouring other peoples dead.

Whilst this forum is predominently Commonwealth orientated, it is about WW2 in General.

Audie Murphy was a War hero in anyones eyes and he was awarded America's Highest Honour for gallantry, not to mention high Honours from other Nations.

He will forever remain an eternal Hero.

People who read about world history will perpetuate all those good people who helped to make it.

    Regards
    Tom

I do believe that I made my position clear also and the orginator also agreed with me and then converted his post into an international petition at the same time thanked me for my view.

I have no objection to anyone contributing to this forum no matter where they are from originally - and contributing to ANY subject as long as they keep in mind that this is a Forum mainly for the British Commonwealth discussions and guests and not to interfere with another Governments jurisdiction - such as this petition sets out to do.

I have no doubt that in the past 60 years the US government has had many discussions on this subject and still refuses to award this honour to this man but rather save this for heads of state as the petitioner states. It is hardly our place to coerce the US Government into doing that we think is just and recognise Mr Murphy as a hero any more than it is an American's - or a Russian's place to coerce Her Majesty or our Prime Minister into awarding Paddy Mayne et al a V.C.

Let us be very clear - this is an American problem - and very little to do with us..
    Cheers

Sorry for the delay but have been out of the Country (US) for a while and have not been able to respond to your last message, but I need to set the record staright.

First, I did not change my position and convert anything. Please do not twist my words. It is a U.S. Petition but because of Murphy's International standing signatures of non-U.S. citizens are welcomed, and I might add you aren't coercing anything, simply requesting.
If anyone reading this post....American, British, German, etc cares to sign then it is certainly welcome. If not, so be it.
Second, to address your "no doubt" concern above, I can assure you that Murphy has never been nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, nor to my knowledge ever considered by any American administration for the award. As their are normally only 12-14 nominees each year, his name has simply been overlooked.
Third, Tom I don't need you constantly bloviating about the Petition, Commonwealth Forum or not. There is no need to.... and we all collectively should support, in my opinion, all of the Veteran's of that great war, regardless of Nationality.
Fourth, and finally, you write "Let us be very clear - this is an American problem - and very little to do with us.."......well......had America said the same thing about the war in Europe the world may very well have witnessed a different flag being hoisted over most of Europe.
As you mentioned in a previous post "Paddy"....who?
I just don't see your point!

    Sincerely,

    Somehow - I didn't think you would -

For your information Paddy Mayne DSO x3 was one of the originators of the SAS and was involved in many acts of heroism but was always passed over for the British highest honour of the V.C.

Tom - I will cut to the chase. Will you ever get over the fact that the 20th Century was the American century? Your continued anti-American comments are a complete bore. I would think that you, as a veteran, would be more respectful to those who try to honor those who served, even if you do not agree with the matter. Regards, Marc

    MLW -
In your opinion the 20th century was all American - fine so be it - and your opinion is that I am a bore - so be it - Audiesdad is of the opinion that that I write in a pompous manner - so be it - Slipdigit - is of the opinion that that I am also Anti-American - so be it -

Fact is that I do respect other Veterans from any country -especially the German 1st Paratroops - 26th Panzers and 29th Panzer Grenadiers whom I had some experience with - However I do have some trouble in respecting those heroes out of Hollywood working on a revisionists historical screen play for the benefit of the big cheques to be had - and invariably not giving any credit to other allies who fought just as hard if not even longer to rid the world of an evil, at a far greater price in economic terms if not manpower.

I shall close now in case I am again made to feel guilty of Bloviating once more.
    Cheers

Hollywood??? Oh, come on. Any other windmills to tilt at?

  15. Tom Canning

I don't think that I am tilting at windmills when it is my opinion that much of what we see coming out of Hollywood is the work of historical revisionists who give no credit to other forces employed in that war to remove an evil which threatened the whole world - another evil is currently threatening the world in which the British - Canadian and Australian forces are teamed up with the American forces and some NATO countries to stem - when can we expect a movie on that co-operative effort ?

Audie Murphy aside - as again what we saw was the work of Hollywood in the main and was and still is the only measure we have of the man notwithstanding his multitude of honours from various levels.

But then - that is only MY opinion as I am quite sure you will respect as I yours- thankfully - Sapper thinks I am one of the good guys !

    Cheers

    Done!

If there was a petition for everyone to get the award they deserved and were being denied I'd sign it, wherever they were from, if it would help.
