    Hello there,

I'm currently trying to research my Great-great uncle and I'm pretty much at a loss with where to go with it. Casualty I know that he died of acute bronchitis but that's pretty much it. Considering his age and rank, I can't imagine he did very much but if there is any more to find out about him, I'd be very interested. I know I can apply for his military records but I don't know if they are still intact.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Regards,
    Joel

Your great great uncle is a casualty of WW1 so you may get a better response by posting your question on Great War Forum
I can tell you that the Royal Naval Division was formed from sailors who were excess to sea going requirements and fought as infantry. One of the eight Battalions was Hood. See if you can get hold of the book The Hood Battalion by Leonard Sellers HOOD BATTALION Royal Naval Division, Antwerp-Gallipoli-France 1914-1918 - Naval & Military Press
Your gg Uncle's Service Record can be found here: Name Davey, Sidney Walter Service Number(s): Z/501 ... Rank or Rating: ... | The National Archives If you go to 'Preview' you will be able to see most of the detail or you can download a copy for £3.50.

Thank you very much, yeah probably a better idea to post there but with the amount of help I got last time I thought I’d give it another go.

    Thank you again,

    Joel

Sydney Walter Davey joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve [RNVR] on 11 December 1915 his number was Sussex Z501. The Royal Navy already had a full complement of seamen at this time and many of the reservists ended up in the Royal Naval Division where they saw active service on land fighting as infantry. They served with distinction at Gallipolli and The Somme suffering heavy casualties along the way. He arrived at Blandford in June 1916 joining the 4th Reserve Battalion. Late 1916 he is assigned to Hood Battalion B.E.F. On the 20 January 1917 he is reported as having Acute Bronchitis and dangerously ill. He died at 11:35 p.m. on that day at the 2nd Australian GH.

If you send me your email address by pm I will send you his service record.

    Regards
    Hugh
