    24th Guards Brigade, 1st Division, 5 Corps
    2620306 Lance-Sergeant Charles WILKES, 5th GRENADIER GUARDS

On 28th April this Lance-Sergeant was in command of an Anti-Tank gun detachment on the Western ridge of DJEBEL BOU AOUKAZ.

After destroying one German tank with his gun his crew were knocked out by accurate and heavy mortar fire. He at once evacuated the wounded still under fire and took command of another gun.

Again on 5th May the crew of a gun were knocked out and under the most intense shell and Mortar fire which this Battalion has experienced again evacuated all possible wounded in a Jeep on his initiative to the Regimental Aid Post across 600 yards of difficult and shell swept ground before returning to his gun site.

This Lance-Sergeant has lost gun, crew, and vehicle by direct hits and remains cheerful and outstandingly gallant under the heaviest fire.

    Signed G.C. GORDON-LENNOX, D.S.O., Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 5th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

    Recommended for D.C.M.
    Granted an Immediate M.M.
