I think it depends what side of the Monty historiography you want to sit on. A lot of what has been written about Monty you have to take with a large pinch of salt, as it has been coloured by inter-allied politics.

Anyway thats a huge can of worms, and a very divisive one at that...

So Monty never said the americans and the poles couldnt fight? The beef between him and Patton Cost mens lives for theyre egos... i find it funny the real greats. IE General Patches and The General Slims ya never hear much about. Only the prima donnas.

Unfortunately he did say something pretty unkind and inaccurate about the Americans, I can't recall the exact reference off the top of my head but I know the comment you mean. The sad thing is that if you read into the higher command of 1944-45, there were too many comments like that flying around

Regarding the Poles, I think his report on the Polish Brigade and Sosabowski was based almost solely on what Browning, Horrocks and Dempsey would have told him. Its pretty inaccurate to say the least, as the Poles did all they were asked to do. Furthermore the Polish Armoured Division had been fighting pretty well under Monty since Normandy.

I agree though, people like Sosabowski were caught in the middle of all these egos... Market Garden came about largely because of the egos.

Patton said his fair share of BS about the brits too... all of it just senseless. The tommy in ww2 was brave NO the entire COUNTRY was brave.. Not just the Soldiers. And dotn get me wrong im not bashing the brits but Monty from what ive read albeit with probably a pro American bias but he was overrated as was patton and Rommel.. One thing in general id never speak ill of british people, served with some wonderful brit soldiers in afghainstan and iraq. and Im proud to call them friends. so please dont take my scorn of Monty as a slam on the Brits.
