A very vicious conflict indeed, here is one of the more in-famous photos of that time, the mob attack a Hungarian AVO (secretpoliceman) Elek László .(Hungarian do surname first.)
The mob were reported to actually rip AVO men apart limb from limb, they were hated that much.

This is all why I reckon the postwar forum was needed, these events are so closely related to ww2 even 11 years after it's close, the aftermath was massive, and in my opinion still ongoing.

I didn't know Radio Free Europe was still going.
RADIO FREE EUROPE / RADIO LIBERTY
The radio station was covertly funded by the US Government who talked of rolling back Communism & inciting the satellite states to throw off the shackles of Communism but when it came to the crunch the US prefered to worry about the Suez Crisis instead.
After reading about what the USSR did over there I can understand one of ex-members hatred of all things Soviet. (You know who I mean.)

They were very much a part of the Prague Velvet Revolution in '89, which was just the most remarkable end imaginable in Czechoslovakia after all that bad blood.
Limited violence and a playwright/poet replacing the old style communists. Would that peoples will could always be so peacefully applied.

Hungarian protesters hijack Soviet-era tank. 24/10/2006. ABC News Online

The tank was one of several that had been on display in the capital as a reminder of the ones that were sent by Russia to put down the uprising in 1956.

Back to 1956, bit of footage from You Tube.
    At 1 min 52 sec & 2m 07s is a PT-76, I forgot they were around in the 1950s.
I had to look twice, I thought they were later than that but I was wrong.
