Hi, people on here seem pretty savvy with all this, so I was hoping to get some help on searching for a relative, although I don't have much information at all as yet about him. His name was Michael John Fitzpatrick, and from what we're told he was in the Green Howards, survived the war, and has an Africa Star, 8th army, two other campaign medals and one missing which we're trying to figure out what it was.. I'm waiting to get the date of birth from another family member, but a snag is that we don't know how to figure out any further details, such as his service number, in order to get any more information about his service history, and hopefully his family. Are there any specific routes I could go through to get hold of some of these details? Thanks

Once you have his date of birth apply for his records. £30 plus 2 to 3 week wait nowadays.
Get a copy of military service records - GOV.UK
A death certificate is also required.
What area did he live in? as there are several M J Fitzpatrick's on Ancestry.

If he was Green Howards, has the Africa Star and was 8th Army, he likely would have served in, either:

4th or 5th Bn Green Howards, 150th Infantry Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division, or

6th or 7th Bn Green Howards, 69th Infantry Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.

    A couple of questions:

    1. What other Campaign Stars or other Medals do you have of his; and
    2. Was he a prisoner of war and if so, where was he captured?

    Best,

    Steve.

Thanks a lot for the replies. We don't know very much about him at all, but I've reached out to one of his daughters who might have some information that can help go towards getting hold of the service records.

The medals we have are the 39-45 star and the George VI 39-45 medal, as well as the Africa star. From what we can tell one is missing. Also, as far as we're aware he was not captured. Thanks

Some extra information a family member just passed on as that he is believe to have been born 7th of July 1914 In Galway, married in 1938. They're not positive that the information is totally accurate, but believe that maybe at some point he was evacuated from Crete before going to Africa, where he was potentially injured by shrapnel and sent to South Africa to recover, and possibly spent some time in the London Hospital for a time with TB, though we don't know if this happened during the war or after.

I know the information is fairly poor, and might not all be totally accurate at all, but it's what we have to go on for now. With the information I've got about his name, date of birth and the like, all I need to try and figure out is what his service number was, hopefully
