I have my fathers discharge paper from WW2. Under battles and campaigns it says Ryukyus .Does that mean he was at Okinawa? Thank you for any info.
The Ryukyus are a chain of islands, of which is Okinawa, the most well known. Your Father was most likely there. If there were any Japanese troops on the smaller islands in the Ryukyu's, by that time, I should image they were already cut off and by passed.
When asking for info on this forum it's a good idea to provide as much background info as possible as this enables people to put the question in context and give the best possible answer - in this case do you know with whom/what your father served?
Thank you so much for your replies!! I was nervous about posting since I don't usually ask questions on forums I have additional information from his discharge papers- My father was enlisted in the Army as an auto mechanic from 1942-1945. (C Company 807 Engineer Bn). Under the battles/campaigns it was had listed "Aleutian Islands & Ryukyus" That's where my initial question came from. And if anyone knows anything about the following decorations: Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze battle stars, 5 overseas service bars, 1 service stripe. Thank you again for any information! I'm sure like many other fathers, my father never talked about being in the war. The only information I have is from a few photos and his discharge papers.
Have you come across this history of the unit in the Aleutians in 1943? The final comment in part 3 reads:- "Approximately 65 percent of the original enlisted and officers are still with the unit on Okinawa in the Ryukyus Islands [at time of writing]." Article Series (U.S. National Park Service)
