On The casualty Capt. E.W. Clark you will discover that in the summer of 1944 the 5th CAD required a 2nd brigade of infantry since none were a available the 1st Canadian Corp re-tasked 1 battery from its 3 Lt AA battalions [the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd] to become the the Lanark and Renfrew Highlanders. I am not sure what became of the them when 1st Can Corp left for NWE in winter '45 but the other 2 battalions in the the brigade were returned to their previous roles [the Westminster's and the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards]. Presumably the Lanark's and Renfrew's did the same retaining their new infantry style name. They acquitted themselves in the quite well as infantry in the battles in Northern Italy.

    Thanks for that Matt,

Sounds like the Canadians did the same as the British, in that a percentage of men from LAA Regts were converted to infantry, due to a shortage of personnel.

    Cheers - Rob

just noticed in C.P. Stacey has the Lanark and Refrew Highlanders listed as the 1st LAA regiment in the order of battle 1st Canadain army May 5th 1945. they did in fact revert to AA after joining the 1st Can Army in Holland in March 45.

As the Commonwealth War Graves Commission do not quote his unit, it will be impossible to find out more about him. The only way to get more information, would be to apply for his service record from the Canadians.

Live Wire since he was from Saskatchewan I took a quick look to see if he was listed on the honour role of the 17th field regiment RCA [from southern Sask] but he does not appear there. All guesses. His date of death suggests that he died in England before any Canadian deployments in Italy; almost, 11 months after Dieppe. Unfortunately a great number of men died in england waiting to go to war. RCA included AA, AT, Field and Heavy Regiments. So best to get his records.

    Hi Matt,

    These are the stats.

Of the 2127 RCA who died in WW2, 648 are listed with no unit shown. They are commemorated in the following countries:-

    Belgium - 5
    France - 22
    Italy - 26
    Netherlands - 15
    Tunisia - 1
    UK - 61
    USA - 4

The bulk of men in unknown units are in Canada - 515
    Canada - 515

I just happen to have the 17th field honour role so I cross referenced to see if there was a match. Alas no luck.
I often go to Canada at War website Canada at War and as you say all RCA casaulties listed there are listed a corp out unit. But those are pretty high KIA numbers for such a small corp think that was discussed elsewhere earlier in the year.
