Hello Does anyone have information about the Royal Armoured Corps Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, more specifically where they were and what they were up to in January 1943. I'm researching men on the local memorials and came across a Joseph Arthur Turner listed on the CWGC with the Yeomanry buried at the Tripoli War Cemetery and having dies/been killed on the 15th January.
Joseph Arthur Turner was killed during the attack on the Wadi at Zem Zem. The SRY lost 11 tanks in the action.
Can't read minds so, just in case you don't know already, they were more typically known as the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. That term should come up with more information in any online searches etc.
Thank you both. Guy. Just what I needed. SDP. I had seen the name come up in various searches but hadn't appreciated they were one and the same.
Their official title was Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry but normally expressed as Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry or SRY for short. The SRY is a very old Regiment being formed in the late 1700s (?) and continuing to this day albeit now reduced to, I believe, 'A' (Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry) Squadron Royal Yeomanry. If you need more personalised contact, they are based at Carlton near Nottingham. They still have an active Old Comrades Association and visit Normandy each year to attend ceremonies in Bayeux which is also the location of one of their Memorials. Let me know if you need more help.
Hello, The regiment was formed as the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry in 1794 and yes we do still exist as A (Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry) Squadron, The Royal Yeomanry. The majority of the museum is based at Thoresby Hall but we do keep a reasonable selection (some would say the choice pieces) on display in the Officers' Mess including "Hitler's" Silver Bowl (it may be called something slightly more vulgar but I wouldn't want to lower the tone). I too am happy to offer up an assistance that I can give, there are a number of very high quality books (some of which very recently released) on the Regiment.
Hi All, Bizarrely my query is identical to VicInIbstock's! In my case I volunteer with a local war museum and post every day on Facebook with details of local men killed on that date. On 15 January 1943, the following man from Glamorgan was killed: Trooper WILLIAM HORACE REES (7938149) Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps Age: 27 Died: 15/01/43 Buried: TRIPOLI WAR CEMETERY, Libya; Coll. grave 6. A. 5-7. Son of Alfred and R. A. Rees, of Cwmbach, Aberdare, Glamorgan. You've all answered the question regarding what they were doing that day, so thank you from me too! Kind regards, Julian
