Ron , have you thought about taking a shooting-stick or a folding chair as it seems to be a long time to be stood up ?

If G-d willing I attend the 2013 ceremony you may very well expect to see a pic of yours truly complete with shooting stick :) :) :)

I have to say that soon the organisers will have to seriously consider how better to assist those infirm and elderly in maintaining their ability to participate.
The numbers of mobility scooters seem to increase each year and may soon have to be organised into phalanxes as if they were tanks in a Moscow parade!
It is a long time for anyone to stand around, let alone those with poor circulation and other ailments. No one doubts their commitment, but after standing still for two hours, with the best will in the world their marching will not be to the standard they would want on this most important occasion.
Even the Queen and Prince P will have to consider potential alternatives to being stood stock still in whatever the weather throws at them in the not too distant future. Fortunately Remembrance Sunday this year was blessed with clement weather, not usually though!

Whitewall tyres & every nut & bolt painted red?
    Sounds good to me.

Not exactly wheel chairs, but very popular with those unable to march, we have provided them since 2005, some of the veterans have to be lifted in and kept warm, but they are there and part of the parade, and that's the most important thing.
See them here this year right at the end at 3.99min COLCHESTER REMEMBRANCE PARADE 2012 - YouTube

Oh VP, will have a word about the wheel nuts, but I think it will be a NO NO

Ron Thank you and the other writers for that interesting snapshot regarding how some of us veterans spent Remembrance Day . Living in Canada ( Pickering, Ontario) I usually go to Ottawa for the ceremony how ever this year because I now belong to a small group of veterans British and Canadians I attended the ceremony that is organised by our local Canadian Legion.
I was very pleased to find out that this was the best turn out for over the past years, about 2,000 people came, and best of all many youngters were among them.
The weather was perfect, sunny and warm temperature about 15c (very high for this time of year) and I had the honour with two other members of our group of laying our wreath at the City of Pickerng Memorial.
Afterward I mingled the people who were very interested in my medals and wanted to where I served. Strangely enough many did not know too much about the North African or the Italian campaigns and that the Canadian forces took part in some of the fiercest fighting in Italy. It was very interesting to see their faces when I told them I was a "D DAY DODGER" and why the troops in Italy were called that name, and that anyone who was there, I am sure, is proud to be called that!
I even sang a sanitized version of the "D Day Dodger" song !. Ron knows I have a very good voice ! a pro chaine

    Now I know I'm getting old !

In advance of this year's annual Cenotaph ceremony, I have finally bought myself a shooting stick :)

With the help of my new toy, I hope to relieve my aching limbs during the 90 minutes that marchers are obliged to stand in Whitehall whilst waiting for the march past.

On last years march, I was shocked to find how my knees suffered on the eventual march off and was determined to do something about it before this year's parade.

I think that she who must be obeyed is secretly much amused by my purchase but if it keeps me marching another few years then I will be a happy man !

Giving this thread a bump to make a strictly selfish appeal for help.

On the National Commemoration Ceremony in 2012 (last year) I recorded the whole ceremony on BT Vision and this included the march off parade.

For the first time I was able to see my contingent (AJEX) and even got to see myself.

Yesterday, because of ongoing trouble with my BT Vision box, I had a visit from a BT engineer and the short story is that the box was declared US and replaced with a new one which meant that I lost the original BBC recording.

Does anyone know if the BBC keeps such recordings and whether or not I can buy a DVD copy ?

With many thanks for any suggestions/solutions

    Ron

Following on my appeal above, I have just had a reply from The British Legion to the efffect that they can not help me in my search for a video of the 2012 Ceremony and parade.

I have tried the BBC with the same negative results.

I am left with looking for a kind forum member who can either supply a recording or put me in touch with someone who can.

    Over to you chaps !

I have been asked if by the phrase 'National Commemoration ceremony' you are referring to the service shown on BBC1 on Remembrance Sunday at The Cenotaph?
I was presuming the same but for sake of clarity you understand ... I had to ask :)

This Remembrance Sunday will see the return of a Chindit contingent marching in the Cenotaph parade. The veterans will be asked to take their places in wheelchairs, this mainly to enable the platoon to move in unison and the vets will be pushed by members of the recently formed 77 Brigade, known as the Cyber Chindits by the media.

It is likely that the Chindits will feature quite early in the march past, but still with over 2000 participants marching before us. Looking forward to next week and hoping for decent weather. Not too cold and not too wet.
