He must have died as a PoW because 4 RTR were destroyed at Tobruk in 1942 & the new 4 RTR wasnt formed until 1945 & didnt serve in Italy.
Hi found this very interesting as this gentleman was my husbands uncle and we were only made aware of his existence after my father in law passed away. Ive attached a photo of the original cross on his grave at Montecassino that we discovered at the bottom of an old suitcase days after my father in law passed.
