Hi, Thanks for sharing your collection. Driver Emmett RASC appears to have followed the exact same route as my late father on leaving PG53 in September 1943 with both ending up in the same working camp at Mistelbach, Austria. I suspect it's highly likely they returned to England together as both completed their liberation questionnaires on 12th May 1945. My father noted the working camp number as B1142/GW Mistelbach and describes the work there as " digging drains for the railways. He noted his liberation date as 5th May 1945. I remember he said the Mistelbach working camp (less than 50 men) were marched away from the advancing Russian Army and ended up being liberated by American 3rd Army in the Sudetenland. They were passed rearwards down the American lines for 3 days - and were equipped with American uniform etc - and arrived at an airfield near Regensberg on VE Day (8th). After an overnight stay they flew to Nancy in Eastern France. The following day (10th) they flew on to Cherbourg and stayed overnight. They returned to UK 11th May. Driver Emmett is the first person I've found who was in Mistelbach. Regards Steve Y
Thanks for the extra information, there are a few more to post, not sure if any other Mistelbach men - the number of Tobruk and Singapore paybooks I have has surprised me - makes you realise the number of men lost at both. Alistair
