Hopefully we will have 5 Royal Artillery men added in the future. Found by Verrieres in Sunderland (Bishopwearmouth) Cemetery and not listed on CWGC. All 5 have CWGC headstones.

    Hi Chris,

Dave found this one (Carew) had been discharged and died on the same day.

For your info there is also another pending.

Thanks Spidge - it's good to see a result from my submission, although it was more good luck than good management. I actually came across the memorial plaque for LAC Carew while looking for other commemorations. If there hadn't been a RAAF reference on his plaque I would have walked past it (mind you, it looks like the RAAF badge that was attached has gone "missing").

I wondered why he wasn't on the RAAF WW2 spreadsheet and when I looked him up on the DVA nominal roll it stated that he had been discharged (on the same day he died). As he appeared on the AWM Roll of Honour it was easy to get the nominal roll corrected and from there the OAWG came on board pretty quickly (and then the CWGC).

I wish it was as simple for the other two submissions we have on the go with the CWGC. For Mitchell they have given me a promise to look into his case and get back with a decision. With Duckworth I've got no idea what is happening except the CWGC and the OAWG seem to think the other mob is doing something.

Regarding the death of ex-LAC Fowler, I don't know if I'm getting anywhere with that one at all. I think the ball is back in my court and I’m running out of shots. Like Carew, I came across his name by accident. In a Brisbane cemetery is the Fowler family plot and on it are memorial plaques for two of their sons that died during WW2.

The older brother was KIA over Germany and is fully commemorated by the CWGC, however, the younger brother doesn’t show up on their database. According to the DVA nominal roll he was discharged 12FEB45 and the grave marker shows he died on 31MAR45. I spoke to the National Archives and I was informed that he was discharged for “personal reasons”. I can’t work out what personal reasons would allow a fit young bloke to leave the service during a world war. Especially one who was working for the RAAF CHEMICAL RESEARCH UNIT – a relatively secret unit that when it wasn’t busy storing dangerous munitions was busily trying to destroy their surplus holdings. I have spoken to a researcher who has written books on Australian military chemical warfare trials and he has no record of this member.

I then struggled to find a cause of death until I was able to get some help from the local Births, Deaths and Marriage bureau. They supplied me with his death registration number - 1945/1001A, which sounded weird to me and to them – but a few dollars later I had a copy of his death certificate. Apparently the strange looking death registration number is due to the fact that his body was never found.

He went missing while surfing (!) off Miami Beach, Southport Queensland (now pretty much known as Surfer’s Paradise) on the 31st of March 1945. An inquest into his death was closed on 31May1946 at Southport by the coroner. I intend to get to the state archives and get a copy of the inquest report. I have read on microfilm both the Brisbane and Southport newspapers for the week either side of his disappearance and there is no mention of the occurrence. They do mention that a couple of people had to be rescued from the water the same week, but no story about anyone going missing.

The newspapers at the time of the inquest findings don’t carry any information either.

I suppose my only shot is to prove that he was discharged due to (physical or mental) health problems and that his death was due to complications caused by his poor health.

Anyhoo, that is where I’m up to........
