    Hi Folks,

My father was posted to North Africa during WW2 on Draft Index RVAYF, according to his service history. I'm trying to find out more about this entry, although I presume it relates to his transportation from GB to North Africa. If possible, I'd like to be able to identify the vessel, port of departure and dates. Can anybody provide any pointers or advice?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob,

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to say that I cannot be of help at the moment, but I am sure that some forum members will be able to help you when they see the request.

I checked my list of abbreviations but yours was not on it.
I haven't checked the abbreviation list on this forum, perhaps you wish to check for it yourself, just in case it is shown.
Click on the Portal and then look for Military Abbreviations on the left column. Click to open and have a look.

    Best of luck.

    Tom

Hi Bob. I have a similar query. How did you find the initial 'Draft Index Number'?

    Hi Toby,

I had the same query a few years back with my grandfather's draft recognition code. I thought it was an acronym at first. I found his code on his Army service records which I sourced from the MOD offices at Glasgow.

    Here is the thread:

    Draft recognition codes.

Hi 'Bamboo'. I've also got my Dad's Army service records from the MOD offices at Glasgow. Where does the 'draft recognition code' appear? Is it the same as the Civil Registration Number (my father's is AITZ 58/3)?

Are you any good at interpreting codes on the service records? For example: "Nature of Engagement: DW" then on a different document: "Nature of Engagement: AC"

    Cheers,

    Toby

Your best bet is to [if you have not already] start a thread on this person and post/upload the service records you have. We have often found that members only post snippets from the record and it is difficult to read it in context and sometimes the members have read something incorrectly

    Hi Toby,

A draft recognition code was allocated to a unit when they were about to travel overseas. This might appear in any entry in relation to his embarkation dates.

I've attached my grandfather's code just before he travelled to India in June 1942.
