I am trying to trace the unit of Leslie Pendlebury. All I have to go on is that he served in 78 Infantry Division in Italy and may have been in the RASC. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards Frank
As you posted this under RASC I guess you must be pretty certain – but just in case – two Royal Artillery attestations Year 1941 11262884 Pendlebury, Leslie In column headed ‘Transfer to other Corps or cause of becoming non-effective and record of re-enlistment (if any) (including date)’ Cancelled MDL Manchester 8.9.41 Year 1940 1691543 Pendlebury, John Leslie S/L To H.L.I. 29/11/44 Hope you find your man.
Tony. The first chap seems to have a number that is one digit longer than the second chap. Is that correct or a typo? Regards Frank
Frank Northern Daily Mail, West Hartlepool, Thursday, August 9, 1951 DID NOT REPORT For failing to present themselves for 15 days training as Army reservists, William Jones (32), of Newton-le-Willows, Lincs, was fined £6, and Leslie Pendlebury (30), also of Newton-le-Willows, was fined £5 at Newton-le-Willows Magistrates’ Court today. They pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay three guineas costs each. Jones told the court that his only Army service was from December, 1939, to August, 1940, when he was released to follow his trade. He did not consider himself an experienced soldier, and did not intend to report for training until he had a house of his own. He had a wife and two young children, and lived in one room. A police officer said that Pendlebury told him he had had five years active service during the war, and considered that young men still enjoying immunity from Army service should go before him. He had been ordered to report again on September 15. There is the same article in another paper, a bit briefer but it states ‘ for failing to present themselves as Army Z Reservists’ I have found a couple of possible birth and some death records but need to do some work to knit them together, before going too much further you may already have these details or they may be of no interest?
