Does anyone know much about this event and/or the I CORPS DIVISION Inter-Unit Association Football Championship, also from 1946? Attached are photos of the medals my dad got for being on the winning team in these. The bottom one used to be silver, but he decided to polish it with burgundy shoe polish for some bizarre reason
Also, I suspect this may be one of the winning teams, as it's got the name of a German photographer on the rear.
Hope it's ok to post this, but here's an excerpt from David Erskine's The Scots Guards 1919-1955 book which mentions the Guards Division Football Cup Final referenced on the bottom medal of the photos above; my dad was moved to 2BN on 19th February 1946.
Joe Brown uploaded this photo, 7th/9th Royal Scots: 1st Corps District Inter Unit Football Champions Germany 1946 Front row, second left, the Royal Scot is Lance-Corporal Eddie Baily. Eddie had a distinguished football career with Tottenham Hotspur and in 1950 four years after playing for the 7th/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, The Royal Scots in Germany awarded his first cap for England on the 2nd July against Spain in the World Cup Finals in Brazil. 7th.9th RS 1st Corps District Inter Unit Football Champions Germany 1946 | WW2Talk
Intriguing. If that's right, it sounds like the same match my dad had a winners medal from, while he was (as I understand it) playing for 3rd Bn Scots Guards. Wonder if Joe's still around; his profile says he was last on here in 2015 and he's 98. Looks like a bit more research is needed into this, although I'm not sure where stuff like this would be recorded. One thing I found though, is that some of Eddie Baily's medals appear to have been sold - see https://www.sportingoldauctions.co.uk/Cat_archive/Sale%20Results%2015.07.16.xls - it's not hugely clear, as it looks like the text is incomplete, but there's an entry that says:
I have an update, although not totally definitive (i.e. there may have been more than one 1 Corps District Inter-Unit Association Football Championship held in Germany 1946 for all I know), on this one. I've also found this reference - EDDIE BAILY Six metal medals awarded to Eddie Baily during his time in the British Army . All - which is the listing with a photo of the medals Eddie Baily won during the war for football. Presumably these were sold after he died. In case this listing disappears, I've downloaded the photo of the medals and attached it here. The 1 Corps District Inter-Unit Association Football Championship Runners-Up Germany 1946 medal in the middle of the top row looks identical to my dad's, other than Eddie's saying "RUNNERS-UP" whereas my dad's says "WINNERS". As I mentioned, it's always possible there was more than one final played between 7/9th Royal Scots and the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards in 1946, but the 3rd Battalion was disbanded a few weeks after this, and my dad was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, so I can't help thinking Joe may have been confusing the "I Corps" one with, perhaps, the "52(L) Division" one.
