In the past, not having applied for the service record of personnel who died out of service, would the MOD accept a photo copy of the required Death Certificate? Or does it have to be the original?

Good question Peter. I cannot for the life of me remember if I sent a photocopy or not when applying for my dad's records. I am sure it must have been a photocopy because I can't remember getting any paperwork back; not even an acknowledgement

Hi Peter from my enquiry in 2007, photocopy was fine. In fact they state clearly on the information letter not to send originals as they will not return anything.

    see attached.

They will accept anything that is proof of death, even a undertakers receipt or a photograph of a post war civilian headstone..
