I came across two Canadian Intelligence units that I cannot figure out what the abbreviations stand for. The units are part of the Order of Battle of 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, Canadian Army Occupation Force in Germany dated 14 July 1945. They are listed with a number of other Canadian Intelligence Units as under command for local administration only. The two units are: 1 Canadian A.R.I.T. Canadian C.S.I. (b) Detachment Does anyone have any idea what they might be?
Might be something here relating to CSI; Archives Search - Library and Archives Canada And an entry for ARIT; Archives Search - Library and Archives Canada Neither gives the full title I realise. Gary
Gary: Thanks. The ARIT reference looks promising and makes sense regarding this formation. I am not sure on the CSI reference since it brings up the Provost Corps, but the unit may Provost since the entry simply states Intelligence not Canadian Intelligence Corps. I will see where these take me. I have the Canadian Intelligence Corps history and the Canadian Provost Corps history. David
Gary: I followed up on the ARIT reference and found a footnote in the Canadian Intelligence Corps history. On the page in the text it referenced I found the First Canadian Army Refugee Interrogation Team (A.I.R.T.). The note claims there is a war diary. I could not find a serial number or General Order associated with the unit. Here is the unit in a search at the LAC: Archives Search - Library and Archives Canada There are a couple of pages in the history, Scarlet to Green. It is strange that it does not appear in the unit index. David
Mystery solved on the Canadian C.S.I. unit. I looked at the original file and the unit is Canadian G.S.I. (b) Detachment, not C.S.I. The unit is in the Canadian Intelligence Corps history. It is G.S. I(b) and its full name is General Staff, Counter-Intelligence. Gary, again thank for your help pointing me in the right direction. David
I am looking for one final unit abbreviation from the Canadian Army Occupation Force for 14 July 1945. The last three units listed under the Miscellaneous Section are: 6 D.C.U, 8 D.C.U. 9 D.C.U. Since they are listed as Miscellaneous, they are probably not part of some Corps such as the RCOC, RCEME, RCASC, etc. They are listed right after 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 Canadian Town Major. Any idea what D.C.U. stands for?
Document Collection Unit, sometimes referred to as Document Collection Team. Part of the C Int C and mentioned in Scarlet to Green. Cheers, Dan.
Have them listed as 2nd Canadian Infantry Division to 3rd Canadian Infantry Division (CAOF) 9 Jul 45 6 Discharge Collecting Unit 8 Discharge Collecting Unit 9 Discharge Collecting Unit Locations available if required
dryan67 A bit more info, in the British Army was "Disbandment Control Unit" according to the Kew database were RASC units.
I confirmed with the Canadian Intelligence Corps history. They were Document Collection Units. Thanks all.
