Capt RT Bryan from R.A.C. to be War Subs Capt 1st Dec 1943 retaining his present seniority Many Thanks, Paul Hi Paul. War Subs means War Substantive. Might be of interest: Ranks: An Explanation of Substantive, Acting, Temporary Ranks
Hi Paul. War Subs means War Substantive. Might be of interest: Ranks: An Explanation of Substantive, Acting, Temporary Ranks Thank you RosyRedd, that is very helpful! Regards, Paul
Hi Just looking on the very extensive Naval OOB for Force 120/140 (Op Manna) and as ever it is a minefield of abbreviations, here's the ones I have already worked out: ML (Motor Launch) BDV (Boom Defense Vessel) HDML (Harbour Defense Motor Launch) AHSF (Anglo Hellenic Schooner Flotilla) LC(N) Landing Craft (Navigation) LC(H) Landing Craft (Headquarters) LS(G) Landing Ship (Gantry) FDT (Fighter Direction Tender) FT (Fleet Tender) However am completely stumped with two ships that were designated as "EM 52 and "EM 53". Any ideas what the EM designation represents? Thanks as ever Gus
Hi Jules You were half right. EM was "Escort Minesweeper" Thanks for the nudge in the right direction. Gus
Anyone help with 'A & S Group 26' on one of my uncles service records Dec 1943. He was with 5th Battlion East Yorkshires Thanks, Graham
From memory, it's demob-related: Age & Service Thanks for the reply. I am still a little confused because his age and service don't add up to 26 and then there's the word 'Group'. I have attached a thumbnail to show it. Graham
Graham To confuse you further go see this thread about Demob Groups: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/general/15451-demob.html Ron
Idler Yes, that's a much better thread on the subject of Demob Groups. I particularly like and recommend the link : The Demobilisation Process « Yale Books Blog: Yale University Press London Ron
Well thank you so much everyone. That makes it so clear and yet another mystery cleared up particularly from the Yale document (thanks Ron). I can calculate his release group number as 26 from his age and when he joined up being 26 so ' A+S Group =26 and his leave was granted 24/2/45. Thank you again. Graham
Hi All, Got another abreviation can't figure out and wonder if anyone can help. The abreviation is for medals awardd and I think it is 'RII 35/44 and A.F.B. 2063' the 'R' could be a 'P' I have attached a thumbnail. I know what the B3070 is a form for claiming Stars the form 2068 was for claiming medals. Hope you can help (again) Graham
Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts on the above abbreviations P or RII and AFB 2063? Could it be the Defence medal and/or the War medal? Thanks, Graham
Can anyone help with the following abbreviation. Adn Hosp Xii Win. W.D. DCL 344. I know the first bit is admitted to hospital and placed on X ii list but its the next bit that I can't decipher Win A. W.D... DCL 344? Thanks, Graham
For the earlier posts: AFB2063 is another claim form according to this. P.II 35/44 could be interpreted as 'Part II Orders Serial 33 of 1944'. Nothing's leaping out for the hospital entry, I'm afraid.
