Hi Can anyone help out with the various abbreviations below on my dad's record please as well as the two locations in Germany at the end as I'm struggling with the scribble... I know 2RUR and HQ 9th British Infantry Brigade but: 20th T.C.R.E. ? 143 O.C.T.U. R.E. ? 161 (RMC) O.C.T.U. and short spell in "7" or "1" RUR? I didn't think there was a 7th Battalion of RUR although his refusal to fly anywhere in later life may explain 1 RUR? and no idea what the last two items/locations listed are. Many thanks. Quis
My guess: 20th Training Centre Royal Engineers 143 Officer Cadet Taining Unit Royal Engineers 161 (Royal Marine Commando) Officer Cadet Training Unit Commisioned 7th Bn RUR 2nd Bn RUR HQ 9th Bn Infantry Brigade - 9th Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom) - Wikipedia The brigade comprised:[5] 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers 2nd Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles Kassel - Wikipedia Bad Oeynhausen - Wikipedia TD
Hi, I’d agree with TD other then 161 (RMC) OCTU is a reference to the OCTU based at Royal Military College Sandhurst (location moved to Mons Barracks, Aldershot sometime In 1942). Mons Officer Cadet School - Wikipedia Steve
Hi Tricky Many thanks for this, he rarely spoke about the war and never mentioned the commandos but I will do a bit more digging and see what I can find. He apparently did once mention he had to deal with the aftermath of a concentration camp but there weren't any on the 2RUR/9 Brigade HQ route so I wasn't sure where it could have been, but perhaps it was at Kassel as I see from your Wiki link that there was a local sub camp of Dachau there. Any idea what the "N.C.C. C.C.G." abbreviation refers to on the penultimate entry? I know that just before this he had been recommended for the position of "Town Major" as below so perhaps is something to do with that? Thanks again. Quis
Hi Steve That make perfect sense as have a photo relating to this stating is taken at Aldershot in 1943. Presumably these Officer Cadets were from a range of Regiments? Thanks again. Quis P.S. and only just noticed the clue is in the picture.......the emblem at the top is for "Royal Military College" .......doh...
I think Steve will be closer than I re RMC = Royal Military College, so dont waste time with the Commando's - it jumped into my empty head CCG ? perhaps a term for Commander of the Garrison TD
Brilliant - thanks very much, now I just need to work out the "N.C.C." bit as only thing I can find is "Non Combatant Corps" which doesn't seem right somehow?? Thanks. Quis
The Non-Combatant Corps consisted of men not physically fit and conscientious objectors. Once war had finished there was a much wider range of jobs they could be employed in. Richard
