    RIP you brave lads.

Thanks to Geoffs Search Engine for letting me find the lads from the 80 Assault Squadron there may be more but these are the only headstones that mention the 80 Assault RE.

It just goes to illustrate the fragility of life in wartime and the price that was paid for peace.

Hopefully you can get photographs of their headstones sometime, Michael.

And know with a big thanks to James Day i can finally add the headstones to the chaps from the 80th Assault Squadron who fell on D-Day and the 3 days following.
As i said there will be more casualtys but these are the only ones that have 80 Assault Squadron on their details from the CWGC.

After leaving the ramp of the LCT another LCT came close and knocked into the tank that Porter, Cordwell and Gunning were in and unfortunately it started to fill with water, the crew were ordered to dismount and get to shore.
Unfortunately Porter, Cordwell and Gunning were killed by sniping from a strong point opposite the beach.

From the report on action of the 80th Assault Squadron from Major Wiltshire.

    June 7th.
Sqd moved to BENY-SUR-MER. We now changed to 51(H) Div Commandand help take over a wood just west of Beny overlooking the radar station. This station had not been captured as had been hoped and was of unknown strength. During the evening the sdn moved up to stage an attack.
Capt. Easery with 3 AVRE sallied out at about 2100hrs and closed the position, unfortunately too closely and the leading tank had a track blown off and 2 men wounded from the explosion. Pillboxes were engaged with Petard and Besa. Intense Atk fire opened and 2 tanks brewed up, one exploding. I ordered the remaining tank one to retire and give cover for any survivors. This tank got out safely but was severely knocked about, having sustained 6 hits.

    Casualtys
    2 OR's missing believed killed.
    4 badly burned.
    3 shocked (since returned)
    2 AVRE's.
