Hi can anyone help in understanding the codes on my relative’s service record??

There are lots of codes and abbreviations which I can’t fathom out. I have had some pointers but any help would be really appreciated.

I wouldn't waste time wondering about those numbers in the far left columns as they only are warnings and authorise some clerk to put the facts into the right pigeon hole and have no relevance for us peasants...

what is more meaningful is that there is not a lot of facts on what he did during his five years service - apart form being on the Y( unemployed) list - stopped three days pay for forgetting to return to camp etc- no mention of the fact that he was with the 2nd Battalion Warwicks when they landed on Sword beach on D Day - after our Sapper had cleared the way for 185th Brigade in 3rd Division and was probably killed in an attack on Caen on the 23rd June - so it might be a good idea to get hold of the battalions war diary and that will give you a better understanding of what exactly he did with his time .....
    Cheers

thanks tom a bit more info there i had no idea the y meant unemployed! Just under it says 2nd then posted from y list . j.o.3 any ideas on that one??
i did think it strange not being much on his records i have another relative who was in the RAMC i beleive attached to the polar bear division his record is rammed full of info. Any idea why my guy is so empty of entries? or is it he was just unfortunate to killed so early after d-day??
I have the diary and on the date of his death 23/06/44 it just says heavy mortar fire casulties taken shame all other days are more descriptive.
    thanks for the help. Jason.

    Hi

as far as I know they relate to his occupation outside the army, before he joined up. As to what they are, sorry I have no idea, but it would be good to have a list of them as I could then foind out what they mean on my Father's records too!

    regards

    Robert

no use becoming frustrated - this is the British Army and therefore - if he was a brain surgeon before call up - he would more than likely be trained as a Cook - the fact that he ws a riveter trained as rifleman has no bearing on anything- main fact is he was able to walk -run - jump -and carry a rifle and ten tons of ammunition - was all the Army was interested in - so to try and ascertain which Company of which Battalion of which Regiment is usually tricky - BUT if you scan his records we MIGHT be able to assist in figuring out who he was with in which battle etc when he was killed....so kick the cat ...and scan his records ...

    Stopgoingon-

quite correct the "Y" list was unemployed awaitng further posting - in this case to the 32 Regimental Holding Unit in the 101st Reinforcement group- then on to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Warwicks in time for D Day and the NWE campaign - no doubt as a rifleman ..

Trying to find out about my Grandfather. I have some info, but he died in 1936 before I was born. He did service in the RASC from about 1920 and I have a picture of him. as a Sergeant c/w with swagger stick. On his call up papers it is stated that he served in the 2nd Batt Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and there is some suggestion that he may have been in Malta.
