I have for some time asked myself this question and never really taken the time to answer it through a bit of research. Where did everyone go after the holocaust? For many a return home was not an option, I believe that even today there are only a few thousand Jews living in Poland and certainly Germany was out of the question as were many other countries.

For most their only hope was the state of Israel. however, many ended up in DP camps established on Cyprus, which were described by Golda meir as being similar to the Concentration camps that many had left. A total of some 1600 men, women and children died in those camps
Besides Israel, a lot of them seem to have gone to three places: the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Australians changed their immigration laws to start admitting DPs from Europe after the war, and that was a hot political issue Down Under. It was a major departure from their "all-British" policy. They eventually got a sizable Jewish population centered on Melbourne and Sydney. Canada got the same thing...they went to Montreal and Toronto. The United States we know about, of course. Most of the Holocaust survivors I have met are Hungarians, who were hauled in last, and therefore had the better chance of surviving. Not many went back to Poland and Eastern Europe. Hitler achieved his dream of a "Jew-free" Eastern Europe.
