    Hi Tom,

Thanks for these great posts as always.
There are some really useful numbers here. I have 2 Scammell Recovery and a Scammell Transporter 1/35th scale model kits to do, and there is a Ward La France kit being released sometime this year.
    What is a Ford 3-ton 4x4 Binned?

    Cheers

    Kevin

Thanks Tom. I've extracted the motorcycle stuff and posted it on the WD Motorcycle forum. The serial numbers can be linked to the frame numbers. It may be possible to find if the bikes saw post-war service or indeed if any are still about.

    Kevin,

I think the Ford 3-ton 4x4 binned was basically adapted to carry stores but not in bulk. More like a mobile workshop stores section, with bins for individual parts, etc.

    Rich,

I thought you might like the motorcycle numbers, there are more for individual units which I'll post up on separate threads.

  9. Thanks for these lists Tom!

I had these frames and photo of an ARV on my PC, but did not know to what unit it belonged. Now I do! :)

    Michel,

That's great. It's always good to get another ID sorted. :)

It's worth noting as well that on 26 July 1944:

"Two ARVs with crews posted to No. 1 Rec. Coy."

There is also a film clip on IWM showing the re-enactment of the recovery of a Pz IV by one of the ARVs which is also recorded in the war diary:

    1 July 1944 La Delivrande 0181 C.O.: Major T.F.V. Mason
    0015
Night recce carried out forward of FDLS to recover a Pz IV Tk, recovered in face of sharp mortaring by enemy. ARV comd by Sgt Willis. [033737 – F/1]

    2 July 1944 La Delivrande 0181
Pz IV recovered yesterday brought into wshops for repair and inspection.

    3 July 1944 La Delivrande 0181
Army Film Unit photographed episode Sgt Willis ARV 1 Jul 44, scenes reconstructed in wshop area. Work in all sections proceeding. Weather very bad, heavy rain all day.

    Hope that helps!

    Regards

  12. The Sherman V ARV on the films in Michael's post above is T148408. It seems that the WD No. T148480 as listed is a typo (inversion of the last two digits) and should read T148408 instead:

    Michel,

That's interesting. I went back to check the original and it does say T148480. Very poor staff work!

I've edited the original post to show the corrected number.
