Not sick when they went in... just before and after... so fit for duty when they went through the worst of it... ;)

Ah right, thank you for clearing that up.

Does anything else of interest stand out that you can see? I’m afraid I don’t see a great deal and the handwriting is throwing me off a little.

Hey everyone, long time no speak. I hope everyone is doing well.
I’ve just come back from Malta (amazing place and the war museums are a must) and this has got me back to looking at the the information provided by the war records people.

The below has caught my eye and I’m after some clarification on the bottom of the image. I see what looks like ‘efficiency medal’ and some other bits and bobs. The campaign medals are listed on the top, so I can only assume these are additional??

    Any help would be great.

  4. Hello,
I am doing some research on my wife's grandfather who most probably served in the 2 KORR. Her grandmother mentioned that he served in Egypt, that he was posted in Maymyo at the beginning of the war, and we think he served in the Chindits (I am trying to get the picture of him in uniform for confirmation). This is all we have, apart the fact that his name was Nobby or Tobby Clark(e).
I am very interested in the diary files of the 2nd KORR that you mentioned because he could be mentioned somewhere in them.
Would you mind sharing these files in the forum or letting me know where I can find them?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Guillaume... first off, welcome to the "Heaven/Hell" that research can become... the records for the 2nd KORR are freely available from The National Archives in Kew... the files relevant to your research that I have amount to 437gb of data and 1237 files, most of them being images of the files, and unless "Nobby" (not likely to be Tobby) Clarke (a very common nickname/name, Nobby Clarke, Chalky White, etc) was an officer or was listed as MIA (Missing in Action) it is highly unlikely that he will appear in the records...
And just to be clear, these are just the files that are for the training in India in 1943, and up to (approx) August 1944... so no material regarding the regiment's time in Egypt...
It is important that you obtain his wartime records... something that does have a nominal cost, but at least this is the first step...
It will NOT tell you which "Column" he was in (each Battalion was split from 800 men into 2 x 400 men, and then into platoons of 40 men each), 41 or 46 Column...
A quick review of the files shows no officer or MIA listing with the name Clark/e so he was of a lower rank than Lieutenant...
Unless "Nobby" told you (or any family member) any part of his story, it is unlikely that you will be able to find out what he did, other than general terms...
There are significant books to give you a good overview and that will help give you a better understanding...
I'd recommend "War in the Wilderness" by Tony Redding and "The Road Past Mandalay" by the 111th Indian Infantry Brigade's commanding officer, John "Jack" Masters...
Some of us on here, off and on, have been researching this for in excess of 20 years... hence my Heaven or Hell comment...

  6. Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I will try to find more details. But, everything was lost in a fire in Myanmar and my wife's grandmother is now deceased.
I will try to get the picture of him in his uniform, and share it here, since it may provide more indications on his rank, and so on.
Thank you again for your reply.
As written in your signature: if it was easy, it wouldn't need researching. Which is actually part of the fun :)

  8. Hello,
Thank you again for your previous reply.
My wife indeed confirmed to me that "Nobby" was his nickname, not first name.
His first name was probably Colin.
In addition, please find here his picture in uniform, with my wife's grandmother.
The quality is not great, but could you please confirm his regiment and his rank?
