A little intriguing, as first response is to think of a bombing raid, but there were only 12 Civilian War Dead in the entire month of May 1940, none in Hackney or Homerton. He's not recorded in the Metropolitan Police Book of Remembrance or Roll of Honour (did Hackney come under City of London?) So possibly a traffic accident during the blackout injuring him severely enough to cause his death 6 years later. But to be on CWGC I'd expect it to be related to enemy action to qualify as a CWGC casualty. (The Met Police Book of Remembrance has PC William George Morgan. Killed in a collision with a bus at Sidcup in 1940 whilst cycling to report for duty during the blackout, and he's not a CWGC casualty.)
