Hi all, i am new. Do you have witnesses, writings, witnesses or photos of companies A,B and C of 6th Lincolns in Africa and Italy in 1943?
6 LINCOLNS landed at Salerno on 9 Sep 43 and then progressed steadily up Italy as part of 46 Infantry Division. By 31 Dec 43, they were on the southern bank of the River Garigliano. Regards Frank
Hi, I thought this map of 6th Lincolns activities at Salerno might be of interest - it's from "The History of the Tenth Foot 1919 - 1950" by J.A.A. Griffin. Regards Tom
Tom, is that taken from the original, & how many pages are in the History? I'm sure i once came across a reprint that was not up to much! Quite thin, not many pages! Regards Stu.
Hi Stu, Yes from an original copy - it contains 350-odd pages. I've got it out from the library at the moment - there is something in it for most WW2 theatres. Regards Tom
Hi Tom, that local library of yours is well stocked with Regimental Histories.. Mines useless. The book I'm thinking of, was about 6 Lincolns, but for the life of me I cant remember what it was called? Will see if I can obtain a copy of Griffin's book. Cheers for the heads up. Regards Stu.
I think the book that you are thinking about is "The History of the Sixth Battalion the Lincolnshire Regiment" which looks like it only has 60-odd pages. The wonders of inter-library loan when you live in Hampshire and can get books from the Aldershot library for 70p a loan. Tom
Stu, That's not the one I am currently copying. I've got the Regimental history by Griffin - which is OK to copy. I've seen the 6th Bn history for sale but its about a tenner for 60 pages which is a bit steep IMHO. Regards Tom
I have a copy of Griffin's "The History of the Tenth Foot 1919-1950" in my library. It has four pictures of the 6th Battalion in Italy. It's coverage of the 6th Battalion is quite good.
Tom, i will get in touch regarding Griffin's book. That's what i meant. Another one off the list of 138 Brigade. I did have a quick look on the tin-ternet last night, but no joy. Regards Stu.
Hi, I am Steve Hart a new member, and novice military researcher. I am researching my grandfather F G Hart and his military service. I am currently researching his service with the 6th Lincolnshire Regiment which he joined as Lieutenant on the 4th Feb 44 - Italy from the 1st Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. I am trying identify what company he was in and where he went during his time there. I have the book on the history of the 6th Lincolnshire Regiment, printed by the Navy & Military press, which I am using to plot the Regiments route and I am trying to get to a lower level of detail - e.g. company he was in etc. If anyone has War Diaries or other information on the regiment during Jan-Dec 1944 that they could share I would much appreciate your help. I am happy to trawl through and report back on my finding and progress, and share what information I have so far. He was a career soldier joining in 1920 (Worstershire Regiment ) as a private - discharged in 1939 then recalled in 08/39 to the 1st KOYLI before joining the Lincolnshire in 44. He has both the Africa and Italy Star. Thanks for reading & keep well. Kindest Regards Steve
I had a quick look at the war diary for Feb 1944. Age 40, he was posted as Lieutenant, Quarter Master on 4/2/1944. He was there in March 1944, but his name is not shown in April, replaced with another officer. He was posted from the General List and no mention of his previous Regiment or service number. The Battalion was at a place called Campo.
