    Hello,

I appreciate that this may be cheeky, but I wonder if any forum members are wizzies at photo restoration?

I have visited my great friend Patrick who is a Son/Grandson of one of the original CWGC gardeners and I would like to know if anything can be done for this photo of them, it is the only copy!

Some assistance would be really appreciated as I'm not so hot at touching things up, would it be really cheeky to see if it could be colourized?

    Many thanks in anticipation

    Soren

    Soren, nice photo.
Off topic but is the CWGC gardeners bar still open in Ypres? Spent a nice evening playing snooker there a few years ago!

I am happy to have a go over the next few lunchtimes. If anybody else fancies a go then Soren can have a choice.

One question though, do you have a higher resolution scan of the image? 1000pixels will end up being about 3 1/2 inches across when printed.

If not I'll work with the image above

If you have Adboe photoshop it will restore your photo also in the help area is instructions on how to proceed with the steps.
As it is Slaphead has made a good job of the restoration from the photo on his post.

Just working on this before work and noticed the chap with the flat hat looks to have been added in later. I think it is just an optical effec caused by the small resolution and the jpeg compression, but there seems to be an almost perfec vertical line downwards from the front guys hat..!

BTW Soren, any ideas about what colouring you want the clothing etc?

Here at last is my offering.

Asside from the obvious scratches and dots I have re-contrasted various areas differently to try and get a more even feel from where the picture was bent and caught the light.

I gave adjusted the width on the right where the image was distorted, resurected detail in the bicycle back wheel and sorted out the dark patches on the left.

Where possable I have sharpened up selected bits to bring out detail, but there is some blurring I couldnt fix.

    I hope this is alright.

    Soren,
I tend to work on an enlarged version to pull out the detail and it is that version I have emailed to you. The one below is shrunk back to the original size.

If you let me know what sort of colours you were thinking of I'll add them later.

Just a general colouring, I feel that it is asking too much though, I really appreciate the time that it takes to do.

George Sutherland's ( from the other thread) father is in this picture he will be delighted

    No worries Sorren.
I enjoy this sort of thing. Makes a change from making yet another fern plant.. though this week I have mainly been making a tree... could life get more exciting than that!?

Well, it is finally done (sorry for the huuuuuge delay )

I have sent the large format version to Soren and put this lower resolution one up here just to show off a bit, realy :D

I used a bunch of tricks beyond basic colourisation. If anyone thinks it of interest I could do a tutorial based on this image?

    All the best

    Andy
