Post No.122 - A general scenic picture of Dharan, Burma.

I couldn't find any places in Burma named Dharan. But there is a place in the Eastern Nepal with that name. So I tried to find more details about Agansing Rai and found this:

    CS: Pol-VC Ghurka dies

The family is waiting for Rai's youngest son to arrive from Hong Kong for the funeral, which will be at their home in Dharan, 250 miles from Katmandu.

    and this one:

    StateMaster - Encyclopedia: Agansing Rai

Family sources said his body will be taken to Tarhara in Dharan for the last rites.

Tarhara is also place in Nepal (I couldn't find it on map but it was mentioned in some news from Nepal like this one: "No vehicles have plied the Koshi Highway and Dharan-Dhankuta road stretch. The banda has partially affected the life in Dohabi, Itahari, Tarhara, among other places")

Agansing Rai was born in the Easter Nepal so I guess that his ashes was probably spread there instead in Burma.

Cheers Tom, It's always good to see/remember/find out about the Nations barvest of the brave in my book.

It took a bit of digging but here is his citation:

No. 13290 Cpl. Edward Foster, E. Surr. R. For most conspicuous bravery and initiative.

During an attack the advance was held up in a portion of a village by two enemy machine guns, which were entrenched and strongly covered by wire entanglements.

Cpl. Foster, who was in charge of two Lewis guns, succeeded in entering the trench and engaged the enemy guns. One of the Lewis guns was lost, but Cpl. Foster, with reckless courage, rushed forward and bombed the enemy, thereby recovering the gun. Then getting his two guns into action, he killed the enemy gun team and captured their guns, thereby enabling the advance to continue successfully.

His headstone was erected in June 1997. I suspect from a donation from his former regiment.

I'll check my books in a bit and see if I have a picture of him.

    Update:

Born in Tooting Grove, Streatham, South West London.

Died of Bronchial Pneumonia in St. James Hospital, Tooting.

Remembered; Medals held in the Ashcroft collection, memorial in Villers-Pouich and Foster's Way, King George Park, Wandsworth, London.

Some pictures you wanted relating to Umrao Singh's name on the memorial at St Georges RA Chapel Woolwich.

Not quite what you wanted, as you can see.

As close as I can get because of guess what?

And finally, the closest I can get using the zoom.

Bottom right and you can just make out the surname Singh under 1939 - 45, but this part of the memorial stone is in very bad condition and Andy, before you blow a gasket, money is being raised for the protection etc.

I was about to do so before you asked. It's highly unlikely you'll get a good enough image though. I'm e-mailing Opack to see if I can get in there. With his contacts I'm sure he knows someone who does so I can get a better image.
