    Hi Geoff,

Bowery RCAF was shot down by USN F4Fs off Casablanca in Hudson V8985 so you need to adjust the commeoration data.

Also the Liberator was AL624 not AI-624

    Ross

    Hi Ross,

    Thanks for the info.

Bowery actually survived that crash or was not on it at all?

    Another friendly fire!

    Cheers

    Geoff

St Terry is buried in the Haddington (St Martin’s) New Burial Ground, Haddington, East

    RAAF Haddington

This CWGC plot was intended to serve RAF East Fortune, a WW1 airfield,
from which the first E-W crossing of the Atlantic started (airship R34, in 1919).
It reopened in WW2 and was the home of 60 (night fighter) OTU and then 132 (coastal, strike fighter) OTU. It now serves as the Scotland Museum of Flight.

Sgt Terry was killed in Blenheim 1 L6752 of 60 OTU, which dived into the ground,
in bad weather, at Ormiston Mains farm, about 6 miles SW of East Fortune.

    401729 Sergeant HUTCHESSON Clarence Leonord

    Source:

    AWM 237 (65) NAA : A705, 163/12/209 Commonwealth War Graves records
    Aircraft Type: Beaufighter
    Serial number: R 2378
    Radio call sign:
    Unit: 54 Op Training RAF

    Summary:

On the 13th November 1942, Beaufighter R2378 crashed at 1350 hours at Kettelshiel
Farm near Polwarth, Berwickshire, UK, and the crew of two were killed.
The aircraft had collided in the air with Beaufighter T3359.
Both aircraft were detailed for a special interception exercise and were flying at about
10,500 feet at the time of the accident. R2378 flew about 20/30 feet directly below the
target aircraft T3359, and eventually climbed up and collided with the target aircraft
whose vision was very limited. The Pilot of R2378 lost control in the collision and the
    aircraft crashed.
A Flying accident report stated : “ It seemed likely the both the Pilot and Navigator were
flying on instruments when the collision occurred. This appears the case allowing that the
Nav/Radio would have warned the Pilot of the impending danger of a collision. There is
no explanation as to why they did not bale out. It concluded that the collision was an
error of judgement by the Pilot, and that no blame was attributed to the other aircraft.”

    Summary:

Sunderland DV979 took off from RAF Port Ellen on the 24th January 1943, and crashed
A Court of Inquiry into the accident found that “ The cause of the accident was an error
of judgement by the Captain (1st Pilot) of the aircraft in that he overestimated his altitude
thereby undershooting the flare path and striking an object 35 feet above sea level and
1300 yards from the first flare. It would appear that both pilots were concentrating on
looking for objects directly below instead of using the flare path to estimate their height
    and relative position.”
The depth charges on board the aircraft exploded when the aircraft crashed. Nine on
board the aircraft were killed and three were injured

    Thanks for the detail Ross.

Missed the RH when I was editing. I added the two RN crew as they were apparently not listed on the report to OZ.

    Cheers
