I know 318 Armoured Wksp was the forerunner of 4th Armoured Brigade Wksp but would appreciate extra details:

When and where did 318 begin ( the only diary I can find starts Apr 1943 - haven't been able to read it)
What was it before it was REME, presumably RAOC?
When did it morph into 4th Armd Bde Wksp

A supplementary. Were REME private soldiers called Craftsman as soon as RME was formed in 1942?

    Hi Max,

Can't really help on your main queries but I had a look at the Craftsmen of the Army and I found was some stuff on the 4th Armoured Brigade Wksp during El Alemain . I have attached the pages for your perusal.

    Cheers

    Regarding your supplementary question

I believe the answer to your question is a little complicated

All qualified technical tradesmen were retitled Craftsman on the formation of REME

Drivers MT retained the title Driver if transferred in from RASC, other similar tradesmen from RAOC and RA were retitled Driver

Clerks and Storemen retained the title Private

My source is a very knowledgeable and highly respected member of the now closed REME Museum at Arborfield.

This is my first post. In 1944 at the age of 18 my father Kenneth Eglin entered REME 318 Lancashire. He was from Burnley Lancashire, England. I have created a facebook page with photos I found from Aden, Cratertown, Sidi Bishir, and Alexandria probably between 1945 and 1948. I don't know very much but have been learning bits and pieces of that time and those places. You are welcome to look through the photos for anyone familiar. - Susan Eglin
