Hi Clive and welcome to the forum..I think there is a chap on here researching the 53 Div. A quick search on here may reveal some info as he has been posting unit diaries from the Div I think.

    Greetings, Clive

Just started to visit the site. My late grandfather was with 82 Battery 25th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment. Originally they provided Bofors cover for 50th (Northumbria) Division in the desert, invasion of Sicily, Normandy invasion, northwest Europe. Due to very heavy casualties and duration of hard fighting, 50 Div was sent back to England to become a training division, against Churchill's resistance. However, 25th LAA Regt did not go with them. They joined 53rd (Welsh) Division around a location which was known as "The Island", and stayed with them for the canal and river crossings involved in fighting into Germany, finally ending the war with 53rd Division at Hamburg when the Germans surrendered. Some of the troops stayed on during 1946 for law enforcement duties in Hamburg.

    Hello
looking to find more info re my father Idwal Lewis in the 53rd welsh division in wwII
I have his pay book and have tried deciphering the hand writing and record of specialist employment (as stated in pay book)
he enlisted 16/9/40 at Narborough (puzzled by this due to the fact he lived in sth wales and assume the narborough he enlisted in is in Leicester).
It is stamped C Light A.A.
no 6 search light unit dec41
    gun no l/a/a dec41
    driver i/c may 42
passed standard trade test for dr mech jun 43
mastered ?????( cant read writing) class II waf jun 43
    PT II no 97
    embarked UK 22/6/44
again re the above not sure what his role actually was in the unit

i have group photo of him and 2 x 40mm bofors guns
and he appears to have gone through to Germany
i have many memories of stories but not sure of the exact route his unit took.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated
    regards Clive
    Hello Clive

I haven't visited the site for a considerable time. Just saw your original enquiry to which i replied in '09. Just to let you know that 53 Div into Germany would have been covered by 25th LAA Regt, and since sending my last I have kindly been sent a regimental history. Happy to assist if possible.

    Regards

    Mike
