Last week, an engine of a wrecked plane was found on a mountain top, on the north west of Imphal main airfield. The engine is 14 cylinder radial engine. The engine was found 10 miles, 293 degree from the Imphal main airfield (keep). The engine is attach herewith this post. Can anyone identify the engine make or the tentative plane which must be using this? It looks like Pratt and Whitney R1830, double row, 14 cylinder. I am climbing the mountain this coming Saturday to locate more wrecked parts.

Stab in the dark, but how about a Vultee A-31 Vengeance - Vengeance III's were I believe in RAF service in that area PZULBA - Out of Africa (Retired)
If it is a P&W R-1830, it most likely came off of one of three types of aircraft used in Assam at that time: the Liberator, the Mohawk, or the Dakota. Given the heavy transport traffic into Imphal during the siege, I think the last would be the most likely if the place where it was found is anywhere near the flight path to the field. The Vengeance (mentioned above) used Wright Cyclones, not the R-1830.
